What is the single most important belief that you hold (concerning atheism/theism) that you have a hard time understanding why others don't "see it your way"? Explain.
This may sound weird, and I believe in God in a traditional Christian sense, but what I don't understand is why you would chose to not believe in anything at all. Think about it this way.., if you chose to go with God, and there is one, then you go to heaven when you die, but if it's wrong and there is no God (the contrary belief) when you die nothing happens, in other words, you don't go to hell (no harm done from believing in God). If you don't believe in God and there isn't a God, then you end up the same way, after you die, as the theists do (no harm for either party), but if there IS a God, then the atheist will end up in hell... So the only way to end up "safe" in the afterlife is to believe in God... In which no matter if you're right or wrong (in the end) you will not end up in a hell. Sort of a "what have you got to lose" sort of mentality. I mean what does it hurt to believe in a higher power that loves you and a faith to which you try and better yourself as a human being in. One of my favorite quotes is "To choose doubt as a philosophy of life is akin to choosing immobility as a means of transportation." By Author Yann Martel. If I need to elaborate to make sense of all of this, because it may be confusing, ask and I shall do my best to explain in person.

Probably the fact that science and religion can coexist, which it seems that both theists and atheists argue about. I am a Christian myself, and I am planning to go into chemistry or biochemistry (or both), and I've found that my knowledge of the universe and how it works and how it's all come together has only enhanced my belief in God. The fact that people argue about science like it disproves God just baffles me. Sure, through natural selection some things have changed and adapted to better fit the environment, but there had to have been something behind it all that started the whole thing. Science is only describing the natural world and uncovering the mysteries of how everything that God made works. I mean, you hear about things like ATP Synthase which are essentially little motors in our cells that take in hydrogen ions when the gradient on both sides of the membrane are not balanced and through that process ATP is able to be made (it even looks like a little machine), and it's so complex and intelligent! It just seems to prove to me that there's a God. That's my opinion, at least.
I honestly do not know if I have any beliefs or views on either side of the spectrum, because I am not quite sure what I fully believe. I am still very unsure on what worldview I possess and whether or not I have 100 percent faith in a God, but I do think there may be one. This being said I do not think I hold any views that I have a hard time understanding why others cannot understand them, because I can't understand them myself.
I don't understand how some atheists don't recognize that faith is inherent in every world view. Dawkins said in the video that although we cannot prove definitively that there is no God, it is highly, highly improbable that there is one. Maybe it just boils down to a semantic incongruity, but to me it seems that Dawkins has to have some degree of faith to bridge the gap between the improbability of a God and his own personal certainty that he demonstrates throughout the debate. There are definitely a ton of other things I could write about in this discussion board as well.
I agree with Joshua in the sense that I don't understand how someone could not believe in a god. What would be the purpose of life? God brings so much happiness, love, and comfort to our lives. I have grown up in a Christian home so believing in God and going to church and praying is all I have ever known. I could not imagine living my life without God's guidance. He has a purpose for my life and knowing that he is there and that I will get to meet him in Heaven someday gives me so much hope and comfort. I just don't understand how someone could live without a faith.
A fair amount of people who don't believe a god exist don't think there is purpose in life. People who feel that their life is meaningless might come to believe that all life is meaningless, and only a godless world could be so cruel. This isn't my personal view, but I've done some research into why because the topic interests me, and this is what I've found, in summary.
I don't understand why we have to bash each other because one believes in God and the other doesn't. I have experienced many situations where someone has talked badly about someone because they are Christian. The same goes for being Atheist. I also do not understand the afterlife. I really hope that there is an afterlife because then I really do not want to die. It is crazy to think that there may not be an afterlife. Like once you die, YOU DIE AND NOTHING ELSE HAPPENS! That is scary.
I also agree with what josh said, I grow up in a Christain home and I don't see how people don't think there is a god. I believe that there was something that created everything it didn't just appear.. A greater power had to of created life. God created us to love not fight. And he also provides guidance to my life and I don't know what I would do without him.
I believe in God and that he is everlasting and so on and so forth what I don’t understand is how you can disagree with this and invoke Darwin and his ideas. I don’t understand how any intelligent person can stand on their soap box and say that we evolved over millions of years from bacteria and that now we have somehow overcome Darwin and his ideas. First of all if you believe that Darwin’s idea was universal then this makes no sense how you can rise above it and second of all how did we even get to bacteria in the first place. So in answer to how we got to bacteria they say we evolved from the big bang which begs the question how in the heck two uncombinable elements Hydrogen and Helium created other elements and second and more importantly how did we go form non-living things to living things. Are you telling me that if you put a rock in a certain climate it will eventually mutate into something living? Getting back to Darwin’s supposed theory of life he never applied it to all of time he merely stated that it seemed to work on a couple miniscule islands off the coast of Asia and that maybe just maybe different species had evolved from one species. Now this theory has never been proved and therefore is still just a theory and yet very smart men feel that they can invoke this as solid evidence to back up whatever the heck they want and then have the guts to say that God cannot possibly be real because science “clearly” states that Darwin and evolution are right. So I conclude with the idea that as Dawkins called God the God of the gaps I must conclude that he is very wrong and instead must have meant ,being an intelligent man, Evolution of the gaps in science, because how can you find the theory of the universe if we still haven’t found a proper theory of life. So until someone can prove to me why my points are wrong I will never be able to understand why Darwin is ever brought into the question of atheism and theism.
Like a lot of people have already said, it's hard to believe theres not a God. With all I know and what I've experienced I have no doubt that there is a God. He believe he exists in our emotions. I also cannot see how someone could exist without the comfort and guidance of God. How do we base our morals without guidance? and how can we still be uplifted when we are lonely? Knowing that God always has your back and has a plan for you is the most relieving thing that exists.
What I don't get is how Atheists refute the Bible. The Bible literally predicts so many things that have come true in our world. Also, in Revelations, the Bible speaks about how the world becomes more secular and turns away from God and His Word. And that's literally happening right in front of our eyes every day, and atheists don't seem to see that. It's honestly beyond me
Like you, Mr. Phillips, I cannot see how anyone could disagree with what I believe about abortion. I know that branches off a bit outside of religion, but to me it has a lot to do with what you believe about God. I believe God mourns the loss of any child, whether the loss was caused or complete happenstance. If humans discovered a replicating cell on Mars, wouldn't they call it "life"? That's interesting to me, that we could call something foreign "life", yet we're hesitant to call even our own species lifeforms until they've reached a certain stage of physical development inside a mother's womb. I can see how people who have been raped might not want to have a child who is the product of a rape. I don't have a good answer for what should be done about that, because I believe both rape and abortion are wrong in different ways. I do know, however, of someone who was born as a product of a rape, and they are joyful, pleasant to be around, and (to me) inspiring. I believe people who are products of unfortunate situations can make beautiful things out of their ordeals, if they've got the right mindset. All that I know about myself on this matter is that I believe the terminating (or even the prevention) of a human life simply can't be right. How many wonderful people have we prevented from coming about? You could argue the opposite as well, but it's futile to fear that which we haven't seen or known, in my opinion. To go back to the original question and put my answer plainly, I don't see how atheists and theists could disagree on how something is defined as "being alive".
When I read the discussion board question for this week the topic that Janey wrote about and that was mentioned in other post came to my mind as well. As a Christian I hold a strong belief in God and the Bible and I cannot seem to grasp how others do not. I respect people who have their own beliefs, but I do not understand how people can believe that there is not a God who created the beautiful and complex world we live in. In the debate we watched in class Dawkins says that theist fail to look into how the world was created and ask question, instead we just say that God did it. Well, quite frankly yes, I do believe God did it because it is written and explained to us in the Bible. Also, Dawkins refers to science as defiance to God and His existence, but I see it as the complete opposite. After being in various science classes and learning so much about the complexity of the human body and the universe I have been amazed and my faith has only grown. Yes, God gives me that “awe” factor, but it is because I learn things and I become certain in knowing that there is no way something so incomprehensible and wonderful could just develop; God created the people and the universe. Dawkins finds it very unlikely that a God created people and the world, but he also states that after hundreds of years no one has been able to disprove the Bible or the existence of God and I think in that statement is your answer.
I don't believe any "traditional" religion as some of you are saying, yes I believe there is something that created the world and everything in and around it, but I do not believe that whatever it is interferes with our everyday lives.
I'll never understand how people believe everyone should share their personal belief. With nearly 7 billion people spread across the entirety of the planet, it makes sense that people think differently. It also upsets me on a deeper level that in some religions that a nonbeliever is considered inherently evil solely based on what they believe.
I don't understand why some people don't believe that God is apart of our day to day lifestyle. I believe in a very personal God. A God that is involved in my life everyday and every step of the way through life. When I am struggling with people and relationships with them I turn to the Bible and God to give me strength. Why would people not think he is with us everyday. I don't understand.
I strongly believe that everything in our lives happens for a reason and the reason is God, I feel like a lot of people agree with this notion, but when hardships are put in their life or things begin to take a turn for the worst people begin to disagree and resent this statement. People also might start to stray with their walk with God because of the struggle He put in our lives. I believe that He put the struggles in our life for a reason and intends for us to use the struggle to make us stronger people and grow a stronger relationship with Him.
Because of recent events with my mom I have found myself slowly believing that there is a God that interferes with our personal lives, but not necessarily on a day-to-day basis(based on the circumstances of the situation with my mom). I believe that there is a God that can hear and answer our prayers. I agree 100% with what Connor said about how it shouldn't be something that people get dogged on for. What you believe is what you believe. You should be able to express it and not feel threatened by someone simply because they do not agree with you. I mean its in our Constitution that we have freedom of speech, so if we want it to apply when it comes to speaking about things against authority it should apply to us in our everyday lives. This, too, with our freedom of religion. We should be able to believe whatever we want to believe without feeling threatened by those around us. If I want to believe that God is a rainbow unicorn I should be able to believe that God is a rainbow unicorn and be able to voice that belief without people attacking me telling me that I'm being ridiculous and that God is a human not a unicorn.
I do not understand why people think that God is the answer to everyone problem you may have. I guess that I do not like people who use religion as a crutch or as an excuse to not get things done for themselves and rely on our Father to fix things for them. Why would God fix something for you when you do not want to take the time or give the effort to fix it for yourself? I also do not understand why people insist on one religion being more "correct" or "true" than another. We are all here doing the same things, why would you want to completely separate yourself from hundreds of other people's religions by completely discrediting their God?I just do not understand this. I also do not understand why people go on mission trips to other countries to spread God's word while we have thousands of people here, locally, who could use the same help. It is a waste of money. Donate that money you would spend going there to a well in Africa or to St. Judes and really make a difference. I'm sorry but those kids in other countries have hundreds of mission crews come through their villages. They are not going to receive any more "special help" or guidance from you than from the next round of teens who just raised thousands of dollars to travel out of the country when they could have made a bigger difference donating that money and missing out on the "experience" they all crave.
I've never understood how someone can just say "God doesn't have to be created, he just always was." Personally, I will never be able to wrap my head around that, I can't subscribe to that belief because I just plainly don't believe it. In my mind, everything has to be created so to tell me something wasn't created, it just was will make me consider you crazy. Look at it like this: If someone points at a toy truck and tells you, "That wasn't created, it just always was." You would look at them like they are an absolute psycho. That's the same argument people who believe in God have but more people have it so it isn't considered crazy.
when I look around, or go on a hike and sit at the top of the mountain or at its peek and look out at all the beauty of the world there just has to be a creator. when i'm looking out and see all the beautiful things then I read in the bible that we are the most beautiful creature and thing that he made on the earth. when I think about that, that is unreal and I don't know how others don't see how insane and important they are to God.
This may sound weird, and I believe in God in a traditional Christian sense, but what I don't understand is why you would chose to not believe in anything at all. ReplyDeletewhen I look around, or go on a hike and sit at the top of the mountain or at its peek and look out at all the beauty of the world there just has to be a creator. when i'm looking out and see all the beautiful things then I read in the bible that we are the most beautiful creature and thing that he made on the earth. when I think about that, that is unreal and I don't know how others don't see how insane and important they are to God.
